Preparing Your Home for an Installation Project

So you’ve decided to update your home’s windows or doors. Next, you’ve chosen the style that you want and scheduled the installation. What comes next?

It’s time to start prepping your home for the installation! Whether you’re replacing your old windows with better quality energy-efficient windows or updating to a stylish new entry door, follow these installation prep tips to make the process go more smoothly:

Move it Away

Make your contractors’ life easier by moving furniture away from the space where there will be work done. Have a couch in front of the window? Move it over to the other side of the room for the duration of the installation to clear the work area. 

Don’t forget about the space outdoors! If you have any furniture near an entry or patio door, move it to the other side of your porch or deck or clear it off completely during the installation. 

Take it Down

Are the contractors installing a window? Don’t forget about the window treatments! Take down any blinds or curtains that will get in the way while your windows are being replaced. This even includes any artwork or picture frames hanging on the walls as well! Our contractors make the effort to be extremely careful, but you don't want to risk your personal items being damaged in the process.

Lay it Down

Although most contractors will do their best to leave your home as clean as they arrived by putting down drop cloths in the work areas, you could be extra cautious by laying down your own first.

Note: If our installers have to move any furniture or window and door treatments, you will be charged an additional $10.00 per opening. If they must disassemble any items to move them from the area, you will be charged $10.00 for every item that they have to reassemble. We are not responsible for any damage that occurs to items that need to be cleared.

4 Tips to Keep Your Home Warm And Save Money

There’s no denying that winter around this area can get COLD, so what can you do to save on heating?

Going out? Turn it Down!

It is okay to turn your heat down if you know you will be leaving your home for an extended period of time. In fact, turning the temperature down 10-15% while you’re gone can help lower your heating costs every month.

Try installing a programmable thermostat if you’re on a regular work schedule, programming it to turn on a half hour before you arrive home so you can walk in to a comfortable temperature. Note: Make sure to keep the heat on high enough to prevent pipes from freezing.

If your windows are single-pane or worn-out, consider getting double-pane replacements with insulating gas that can help keep the heat out in summer and the regulated temperature inside your home in winter. Insulated windows will help bring about a more comfortable home environment.

4.    Check out the condition of your home’s doors. Replace worn weather stripping around each exterior door and use a rolled blanket, towel, or rug to cover the usually-drafty area at the bottom of the door. You shouldn’t need to replace the door itself unless it is very old or continues to be drafty after installing new weather stripping. Entry doors are usually very well insulated and models newer than 10 years old should not be drafty.

5 Signs That It’s Time to Replace Your Roof

The roof is one of those things that most of us really don’t start to pay attention to until something goes wrong. Your home’s roof is one of the most important parts of your house; it protects you all year long, so now it’s time for you to protect it.

So what are some signs that it’s time for you to replace your roof? Let’s take a look:

1. Attic Leak

This should seem obvious, but if your attic has puddles after a rainstorm, it might be time for your roof to be replaced. This problem could arise due to a variety of issues such as: inadequate shingle underlayment, poorly installed flashing (the aluminum or steel pieces between joints), or deterioration. Wind is one likely culprit of a leaky roof, and ice damage is another (we all know how the Pennsylvania snow can be sometimes).

2. Blistering/Peeling Paint

When the paint inside or outside you home begins to blister or peel off, it may be because of a high amount of moisture in the house. The cause of this is the air not being able to ventilate correctly.

3. Stains, Mold, or Mildew on Ceilings and Walls

Before the cool weather finally decides to stick around for good in Central Pennsylvania, it’s a smart idea to make sure your windows and doors are ready! Did you know that if you add up the heat-loss from all the cracks and holes in the average home, it would add up to the equivalent of leaving 1 window open every day of the year. That’s a lot of wasted energy! Let’s fix this.

How to Find a Draft

When you’re trying to identify a draft, wait for a windy day and try these methods:

• Wet your fingers and move them along the cracks of your windows and doors. If you feel a cool breeze on your fingers, you’ve found the culprit.
•  Light a candle and move it along the window or door frame. If the flame flickers, that means that air is moving past.
• Close all your windows and turn off any appliances that may create a disturbance in the air. Light some incense and watch the movement of the smoke. If the smoke is either sucked out the frame or blown into the house, that’s where the draft is coming from.

Fixing a Draft

Now that you’ve identified your problem areas, it’s time to fix it. Here are 3 methods of solving a draft problem:

Draft Stopper: If the draft is coming in from the base of your window or door, one solution is to purchase a draft stopper. Draft stoppers can be purchased online or from local hardware stores. If you’re feeling crafty, try making your own draft stopper.

Weather Stripping: As an alternative option to the draft stopper, weather stripping can be installed. There are many online tutorials for installing weather stripping, or you can leave it to a professional, like Aspen Home Improvements.

Caulking: For drafts coming through the side of a window or door, caulking is a great option. When fixing indoor areas try clear caulking for the best look. Once the caulk has dried, use one of the 3 testing options again to make sure the problem has been fixed.

Replacing: If none of these options seem like the right solution to your problem, you may need a new window or door installed.
